Last chance to lap up Castle Combe driving day
publication date: May 28, 2015
author/source: John Kendall
It’s now five days until the Western Group welcome our PR guests to the annual driving day at Castle Combe Circuit.
Apart from a varied line up of new cars, we shall have a variety of other things to keep our guests entertained.
Kim Henson has been organising our classic cars for the day and the star of our line-up is the Jaguar XK150 FHC belonging to veteran racer Jim Paull, a good friend of WGMW member Tony Lewis.
Suzuki PR chief Alun Parry was planning to bring along the SC100 GX Coupe, popularly known as the “Whizzkid”, to give a flavour of late ‘70s Giugiaro-designed Japanese Kei-Car motoring. Unfortunately, it was in such demand at the SMMT Test Day last week that the tiny car has developed a fuel leak and is away for repair. But Kim has been gathering a range of cars from manufacturers’ collections and Western Group members.
Kim has also been hard at work on our quiz, so sharpen your knowledge of classics and help add to our charity donations too. Our Maxine Ashford has been polishing her baseball bat and will be making the raffle collection for us.
Back by popular demand after last year are the Indian head massage team, kindly sponsored by Mitsubishi. So take a break, get ahead and help our charity donations with a massage.
VW will be demonstrating just how easy reversing a car with a trailer can be, using the new Passat estate equipped with Trailer Assist. No more reverse steering, just use the mirror adjustment to steer the right way.
How many wheels should a motor scooter have? Two? Three? How about four? The Quadro 4 (above) features similar tilting steer technology to that used on three wheels scooters, while many riders will be able to drive it on a car licence. Try it and see on the track.
As usual there will be a range of cars for you to sample on the day and the Tavern team will be preparing another fine barbecue for lunch, if you still have room after the bacon baps.
Vauxhall is sponsoring the smart-check system to record drivers and cars so we can award the customary Driver of the Day and Car of the Day awards with their unique trophies in Bristol Blue Glass and we know these are very keenly fought over. There will be a compulsory safety briefing for all drivers before they take part and by popular demand there are closed sessions on the track for drivers who want to pick up the pace under the watchful and experienced eyes of Castle Combe's track instructors.
If you have yet to register, there is still time. Organiser Alyson Marlow has issued log-in details, but if you have lost yours contact her without delay and she will have you sorted out in no time.
See you on tuesday 2 June at Castle Combe and please remember to bring both parts of your driving licence for insurance purposes. You'll be sorry if you dont come to Combe.
